## How to view photos from an external hard drive on your iPhone or Android

Your photos are on an external hard drive in a drawer. Here's how to view photos on an external hard drive from your iPhone, iPad or Android phone, with the drive plugged in or unplugged.

Last updated October 7, 2026

### The short answer

You have two options. Plug the external hard drive into your phone and open it in the Files app (or your Android phone's file manager), which works only while the drive is connected. Or catalog the drive once with CachePix on your Mac or Windows computer, then browse and search it on your phone with the drive unplugged.

Plugging in suits a quick look. A catalog suits archives too big for a phone, like years of family photos. In a catalog, JPEG, PNG, WebP and RAW photos get thumbnails. HEIC and TIFF photos are cataloged and searchable but show no image on the phone in the current version, and video isn't supported (see [Limits](https://cachepix.com/external-hard-drive-photos-on-phone#limits)).

Table: Plugging the drive in vs browsing a CachePix catalog

| Question | Plug the drive in | Browse a CachePix catalog |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Drive connected? | Yes, while you look | No, it can stay in a drawer |
| Computer needed? | No | Yes, a Mac or Windows computer to catalog and sync |
| What you see | The files on the drive, folder by folder | Thumbnails of cataloged JPEG, PNG, WebP and RAW photos, plus HD previews for a date window you choose |
| Several drives | Only the one plugged in | One catalog covering each drive you've added |

### Method 1: plug the external hard drive into your iPhone or Android phone

To access an external hard drive on your iPhone or iPad, connect it with a cable or adapter that fits your phone's port. Open the Files app, tap Browse, and find the drive under Locations. Tap a photo to open it.

The catch:

- **Format and power.** Your phone has to read the drive's format, and Apple notes that external hard drives often need their own power source with an iPhone: see the [formats Apple lists](https://cachepix.com/cant-view-photos-on-external-hard-drive#format) and the [power options](https://cachepix.com/cant-view-photos-on-external-hard-drive#power). Never reformat a drive that holds your only copies: reformatting erases it.
- **One drive at a time.** Not sure which drive holds the 2014 beach trip? Start plugging.

To view external hard drive photos on Android, connect the drive with a cable or adapter that fits your phone's port and open it in your phone's file manager app. Support varies, so check your phone maker's instructions.

### Method 2: view photos on the external hard drive without plugging it in

CachePix catalogs the photos on your drives from a Mac or Windows computer, then syncs a searchable catalog to free iPhone and Android companion apps. Your photos never go to the cloud.

1. **Catalog the drive.** Install CachePix on your computer, sign in with the code we email you, and start the 14-day free trial (a card is required) or a plan. Connect the drive, open Drives & Folders, choose Catalog a Folder… and pick the drive or a folder on it.
2. **Pair your phone.** In Drives & Folders, open Pair Phone… and click Turn On (phone sync is off until you do). Install CachePix on your phone, sign in with the same email, and scan the QR code.
3. **Sync, then unplug.** The first sync downloads a thumbnail of each cataloged JPEG, PNG, WebP and RAW photo, plus HD previews for the date window you choose. Then the drive can go back in the drawer.

The catalog syncs one way, from your computer to your phone, over your local network. Pair once by scanning a QR code.

> **What you need.** Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or later) on macOS 12 or later. 64-bit Windows (x64). iPhone and iPad on iOS 18 or later. Android 9 or later. [Download CachePix](https://cachepix.com/download) for your computer first.

The phone app also has a sample catalog that needs no account and no computer.

### What you get on the phone

- **Library and search:** one scroll grouped by month, newest first. Search covers filenames, people, keywords and IPTC captions, and filters narrow by Person, Keyword, Drive, Year or Favorites only.
- **People:** CachePix has no facial recognition, face detection or AI tagging. People names come from metadata in your files, or names you type in CachePix.
- **HD previews:** HD previews download automatically for a capture-date window you choose: 30 days, 90 days, 1 year (the default), 2 years or All photos. Free Up Space removes them in one tap and keeps the thumbnails.
- **Get HD:** tap Get HD while your phone is on the same network as your computer and CachePix is running with phone sync turned on. The drive can stay unplugged.
- **Folders and Saved:** browse your own folder tree with breadcrumbs and pinned folders, and keep favorites and collections on the phone.
- **Sharing:** send a cached HD preview by AirDrop, Messages or Save Image to Photos on iPhone, or the share sheet on Android. Saving to Photos saves the HD preview, not the original.

Thumbnails are small. On the library we measured, 190,566 photos (885.66 GB) in two folders on one external drive, they took 8.03 GB on an iPhone, about 44 KB per photo. HD previews add about 349 KB per photo. We measured in August 2026 with the macOS app synced to an iPhone, with HD previews at the default 2048px. Sizes are as the phone reported them. The full method is on the page about [how much space it uses on your phone](https://cachepix.com/how-much-space-on-my-phone). Or meet [the CachePix phone app](https://cachepix.com/phone-app).

### What stays on the drive

Full-size originals stay on your drives. The phone carries thumbnails and HD previews. On a Mac with the drive connected, the CachePix Library adds Copy Full-Resolution…, Reveal in Finder and exporting originals.

Cataloging never modifies, moves, renames or deletes your files. CachePix writes metadata only when you edit it, and only the fields you changed, as standard XMP in the file or in a sidecar next to RAW files. More in the [CachePix FAQ](https://cachepix.com/faq).

> **Not a backup.** CachePix is a catalog, not a backup. It makes your archive findable. It doesn't make a second copy, so keep backing up your drives.

### Photos spread across several drives

Archives sprawl across drives. Add each one with Catalog a Folder… and your phone gets one catalog. Identical copies on different drives become one photo with each location listed. Edited or re-saved copies stay separate.

On Mac, CachePix tracks each drive by its volume ID, so a renamed drive re-links the next time you connect it. The phone's Info sheet names each photo's drive, so you know which one to plug in. ### Limits worth knowing

- **Formats.** CachePix catalogs JPEG, PNG, WebP and 15 RAW formats (CR2, CR3, NEF, NRW, ARW, SR2, RAF, ORF, RW2, DNG, PEF, SRW, X3F, IIQ, 3FR). HEIC and TIFF photos are cataloged and searchable, and previews for them are coming. Video isn't supported. Until HEIC previews ship, HEIC photos (the format many iPhones use) have no image on the phone.
- **Network.** Sync and Get HD need your phone on the same local network as your computer, such as your home Wi-Fi. They don't work over the internet or cellular.
- **Pairing.** A phone or iPad pairs with one computer at a time.
- **Android.** Search shows up to 500 results per query.
- **Mac Photos libraries.** CachePix isn't built to read an Apple Photos library, and it doesn't read a library's albums or edits. Apple Photos syncs a library between your Mac and iPhone through Apple's iCloud Photos service, and only the System Photo Library syncs, so other libraries on a Mac don't.

> **On Windows.** CachePix runs on 64-bit Windows. The drive and folder details on this page (drive names, the Drive filter, the folder tree, renamed drives re-linking and Copy Full-Resolution…) are described for Mac. HEIC previews on Windows have no release date yet.

### View external hard drive photos on an iPad

Both methods work on iPad. For a plugged-in drive, use the Files app, with the same format and power limits as on iPhone. For the catalog, install CachePix on the iPad and pair it the same way as a phone.

### What about iCloud Photos or Google Photos?

Both upload your photos to the vendor's cloud when you turn on backup or iCloud Photos, and both do things CachePix doesn't: Google Photos can search your library by people, places and things using Google's AI, and Apple Photos groups people, dogs and cats in People & Pets. On both, your library counts toward storage sold in tiers, so cost rises as it outgrows each tier. As of October 2026, iCloud+ and Google both list 2 TB at $9.99 a month in the US.

CachePix takes the other route. Your photos, previews and catalog never leave your own computer and phone. CachePix's only online service is your account: email sign-in, the plan check, and Stripe billing in your browser. You supply the drives and the backups. Weighing a move? ### Common questions

Q: Can I plug an external hard drive into my iPhone to see my photos?

A: Yes, with limits. Connect the drive with a cable or adapter that fits your iPhone and open it in the Files app. The iPhone must read the drive's format, and some drives need more power than a phone supplies. CachePix lets you browse with the drive unplugged instead.

Q: Can I view my drive's photos on my phone without plugging the drive in?

A: Yes. CachePix catalogs the drive on your Mac or Windows computer and syncs the catalog to the free iPhone and Android apps over your local network. Thumbnails stay on the phone, so you can browse and search with the drive unplugged. HEIC and TIFF photos are cataloged and searchable but show no image on the phone.

Q: Do I need to keep the computer on?

A: Not to browse. Thumbnails and downloaded HD previews stay on your phone, so CachePix works with the computer off. The computer needs CachePix running with phone sync turned on only when you sync new photos and changes, or tap Get HD. CachePix checks your plan online at least once every 14 days.

Q: Does it work on iPad?

A: Yes. CachePix is a universal app for iPhone and iPad on iOS 18 or later. An iPad pairs like a phone: in the desktop app, open Pair Phone…, click Turn On, and scan the QR code with the iPad on the same local network. You can also open a plugged-in drive in the iPad's Files app.

Q: Can I see the full-size original on my phone?

A: No. Full-size originals stay on your drives, and CachePix never sends them to the phone. The phone carries 512px thumbnails, plus HD previews that your computer makes at 2048px by default. For an original, plug the drive into your computer. On a Mac, Copy Full-Resolution… in CachePix copies it for you.
