## iPhone photo library too big? 885 GB of photos, 8 GB of thumbnails on your phone.

Here's how much phone space a photo catalog uses, measured on a real library. CachePix put 8.03 GB of thumbnails on an iPhone for 190,566 photos (885.66 GB) in two folders on one external drive. HD previews at the default size add about 349 KB per photo for the capture-date window you choose, the last year by default.

### The short answer

CachePix doesn't copy your originals to your phone. Full-size originals stay on your drives. The phone carries thumbnails and HD previews, plus the catalog that makes them searchable.

Thumbnails are the floor. Each cataloged JPEG, PNG, WebP and RAW photo gets one, and together they let you browse and search your catalog with the drives unplugged. On the library we measured, they came to **8.03 GB for 190,566 photos**. That's about 44 KB a photo, and under 1% of the 885.66 GB the originals take up on the drive.

HD previews sit on top of that floor. They download automatically for a capture-date window you choose, the last year by default (the options are under [How to control it](https://cachepix.com/how-much-space-on-my-phone#control)). On this library they averaged about 349 KB each at the default 2048px size.

**885.66 GB** Originals on one external drive

**8.03 GB** Thumbnails on the phone

**110×** Smaller than the originals

> **Quick estimate.** Multiply your cataloged JPEG, PNG, WebP and RAW photos by 44 KB, then add about 349 KB for each of those photos in your HD preview window (at the default preview size).

### When your photo library is too big for your iPhone

A phone has a fixed amount of storage. A big archive won't fit on it as originals, and a bigger phone only moves the wall.

If your iPhone storage is full of photos, here's what to do. You have two good ways to store photos without using phone storage for the originals.

1. **Keep them in iCloud.** With Optimize Storage turned on, Apple says your iPhone keeps space-saving versions of your photos and videos. The full-resolution originals stay in iCloud and download over Wi-Fi or cellular when you need them. Your iCloud plan has to fit the library ([prices below](https://cachepix.com/how-much-space-on-my-phone#why-small)).
2. **Keep them on a drive you own.** Move the originals to an external drive, catalog it with CachePix on your Mac or Windows computer, and sync the catalog to your phone. Here's how to [organize photos on an external hard drive](https://cachepix.com/how-to-organize-photos-on-external-hard-drive).

A catalog changes the math. Your phone carries small thumbnails, plus sharper HD previews for the photos inside the date window you pick. You still scroll the archive by month, search it and open photos away from home. CachePix checks your plan online at least once every 14 days.

Can you view a photo library of nearly 1 TB on a phone? Ours was 885.66 GB, and 8.03 GB of thumbnails made it browsable and searchable. Is there a practical limit? CachePix sets no cap on the number of drives or photos, and the largest library we've measured is the one on this page. On the phone, the number to watch is HD preview storage, and the window sets it.

Know what it doesn't do, though. CachePix catalogs photos in folders on internal, external or removable drives connected to your Mac or Windows computer. It doesn't read, clear or manage your phone's own photo library, iCloud Photos or Google Photos. Getting photos off the phone and onto a drive is a separate step you do first.

> **iPhone photos and HEIC.** HEIC, HEIF and TIFF photos are cataloged and searchable, and previews for them are coming. For now the phone has no image for them, so they add no thumbnail or HD preview storage today. That includes iPhone photos saved as HEIC.

### The library we measured

190,566 photos (885.66 GB) in two folders on one external drive. The CachePix desktop app on a Mac cataloged both folders and synced the catalog to an iPhone over the local network.

Table: The measured library: two folders on one external drive

| Folder | Size on the drive | Items in the folder |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Sports | 817.97 GB | 185,240 |
| Travel | 67.69 GB | 12,397 |
| Total | **885.66 GB** | **197,637** |

Item counts are what the computer listed for each folder. CachePix cataloged 190,566 photos from them, and the per-photo averages divide by that number.

> **Method.** Measured in August 2026 with the CachePix desktop app on macOS, synced to CachePix on an iPhone, with HD previews at the default 2048px and quality 80. Thumbnails are 512px JPEGs at quality 80. Sizes are as reported on the phone, in binary units: GB here means GiB, and KB means KiB.

### What it uses on the phone

Table: Phone storage for the measured library (190,566 photos)

| On the phone | Size | What it covers |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Thumbnails (always) | 8.03 GB | The 190,566 cataloged photos, about 44 KB each |
| HD previews (window you choose) | 63.46 GB at All photos | Photos inside your capture-date window (default: the last year). Measured with All photos at the default 2048px size, about 349 KB each |

Both numbers are real, and the second one needs context. 63.46 GB is the ceiling for this library at the default preview size, because All photos is the widest window CachePix offers. A larger Preview Quality setting raises it. With the default 1-year window, only photos captured in the last year get an HD preview automatically. Undated photos get one only under All photos.

### Thumbnails vs HD previews

Table: Thumbnails and HD previews on the phone, CachePix iOS and Android 1.1.0

| Question | Thumbnails | HD previews |
| --- | --- | --- |
| What it's for | Browse and search the catalog with the drives unplugged | Open a photo sharp with no connection |
| Which photos get one | Each cataloged JPEG, PNG, WebP and RAW photo | Photos in your capture-date window (default: the last year) |
| Image size | 512px, JPEG quality 80 | 2048px by default, set on your computer |
| Removed by Free Up Space | No. They stay, so the catalog stays browsable | Yes, all of them in one tap |
| When one is missing | HEIC, HEIF and TIFF photos have no image on the phone for now | A scaled-up thumbnail. Tap Get HD while your phone is on the same network as your computer and CachePix is running with phone sync turned on |

### Estimate your own library

Your figures will vary with each photo's dimensions and detail, but the pattern holds: thumbnails take a few gigabytes for a large catalog, and the HD window moves your total.

Table: Scaled from the measured totals: 8.03 GB of thumbnails and 63.46 GB of HD previews for 190,566 photos (about 44 KB and 349 KB each)

| Photos cataloged | Thumbnails | HD previews at All photos, default size |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 10,000 | About 0.4 GB | About 3.3 GB |
| 25,000 | About 1.1 GB | About 8.3 GB |
| 50,000 | About 2.1 GB | About 16.7 GB |
| 100,000 | About 4.2 GB | About 33.3 GB |
| 190,566 (measured) | 8.03 GB | 63.46 GB |

All photos is the widest window, not the starting point. The default window covers the last year, so the number that matters is how many photos you took in it.

Table: HD previews for the photos inside your window, at the default preview size

| Photos captured in your window | HD previews |
| --- | --- |
| 1,000 | About 0.3 GB |
| 2,500 | About 0.8 GB |
| 5,000 | About 1.7 GB |
| 10,000 | About 3.3 GB |

A worked example. Say you took 5,000 photos in the last year. With the default 1-year window, HD previews add about 1.7 GB. If your catalog holds 25,000 photos in all, the phone needs about 1.1 GB of thumbnails plus that 1.7 GB, so about 2.8 GB.

Leave out HEIC, HEIF and TIFF photos (no image on the phone yet) and GIF, BMP and video files, which aren't cataloged.

### How to control it

The storage controls live in the phone app's Sync tab. The size of each HD preview is set on your computer.

#### On your phone: the Sync tab

- **Storage on this phone** shows thumbnail and HD preview storage separately, so you can see which one is growing.
- **HD Previews, Auto-download** sets the capture-date window: 30 days, 90 days, 1 year (the default), 2 years or All photos. The Sync tab estimates the size and photo count for your choice before you commit.
- **Free Up Space** removes all HD previews in one tap and keeps the thumbnails. Freeing phone space never touches your drives.

On iPhone, CachePix keeps cached thumbnails and previews out of iCloud backup, and the Android app turns off app backup.

#### On your computer: Preview Quality

In Drives & Folders, Preview Quality… sets the HD preview size: 1600, 2048 (the default), 2560 or 3072px, at quality 75, 80 or 85. A larger setting means larger HD previews, and more space for each one on your phone. New settings apply to new previews, and Regenerate Previews rebuilds the ones you already have. Thumbnails stay at 512px.

### Why this is smaller than the cloud

With iCloud Photos or Google Photos, your storage plan has to fit the library.

- **iCloud Photos** uploads your photos and videos to Apple's iCloud and counts against your iCloud storage, so the monthly cost rises as the library grows. Apple Accounts include 5 GB of free iCloud storage, shared with device backups and other iCloud data. As of October 2026, iCloud+ in the US costs $0.99 a month for 50 GB, $2.99 for 200 GB, $9.99 for 2 TB, $29.99 for 6 TB and $59.99 for 12 TB, and tax may apply. Apple says a plan can be shared with up to five other family members at no extra cost ([Apple iCloud+ plans](https://www.apple.com/icloud/)).
- **Google Photos** is built around backing up your photos and videos to your Google Account's cloud storage. Backups count toward that storage, and more is bought in tiers, so cost rises as a library outgrows each tier (Google makes exceptions for some older Pixel phones and for Storage saver or Express backups made before June 1, 2021). Google Accounts include up to 15 GB free, shared across Google Photos, Gmail and Google Drive. As of October 2026, Google's US pricing pages list $1.99 a month for 100 GB, $4.99 for 400 GB, $9.99 for 2 TB and $19.99 for 5 TB, and the 400 GB and larger plans are sold as Google AI plans that include Gemini features. A paid plan can be shared with up to five other people ([Google storage plans](https://one.google.com/about/plans?hl=en-US&gl=US)).

The 885.66 GB library we measured would need a 2 TB plan on either, $9.99 a month in the US as of October 2026. Prices vary by country. In return, both keep the photos themselves in the cloud, which CachePix doesn't: iCloud Photos keeps your originals at full resolution, and Google says backed-up photos appear on any device where you're signed in to your Google Account.

CachePix takes the other route. The originals stay on the drive you already own. Only the catalog, thumbnails and HD previews reach your phone, and the plan price doesn't change with the size of your archive (see [pricing](https://cachepix.com/pricing)).

Your photos, previews and catalog never leave your own computer and phone. CachePix's only online service is your account: email sign-in, the plan check, and Stripe billing in your browser.

> **Not a backup.** CachePix is a catalog, not a backup. It makes your archive findable. It doesn't make a second copy, so keep backing up your drives.

### Common questions

Q: How much phone storage does CachePix use?

A: CachePix used 8.03 GB of thumbnails on an iPhone for a measured library of 190,566 photos (885.66 GB) in two folders on one external drive. That's about 44 KB per photo. HD previews at the default 2048px size add about 349 KB per photo for the capture-date window you choose, which is the last year by default.

Q: Does my whole photo library have to fit on my phone?

A: No. Full-size originals stay on your drives, and CachePix never sends them to the phone. The phone carries a thumbnail of each cataloged JPEG, PNG, WebP and RAW photo, plus HD previews for the window you choose. For 190,566 photos, the thumbnails took 8.03 GB, under 1% of the 885.66 GB of originals.

Q: What are HD previews, and how much space do they take?

A: HD previews are larger JPEG versions of your photos, 2048px by default, that CachePix keeps on the phone so they open sharp with no connection. They download automatically for a capture-date window you choose: 30 days, 90 days, 1 year (the default), 2 years or All photos. For 190,566 photos, All photos took 63.46 GB, about 349 KB each.

Q: Can I free up the space later?

A: Yes. In the CachePix phone app, open the Sync tab and tap Free Up Space. That one tap removes all HD previews and keeps the thumbnails, so your catalog stays browsable and searchable. Freeing phone space never touches your drives. A shorter window under HD Previews means fewer previews download.

Q: What happens when I open a photo with no HD preview?

A: CachePix shows a scaled-up thumbnail. Tap Get HD while your phone is on the same network as your computer and CachePix is running with phone sync turned on. The drive can stay unplugged. Away from home, you still get the thumbnail and the Info sheet: filename, capture date and time, dimensions, caption, people, keywords and drive.
